What did Pandemrix contain?
Pandemrix contained killed H1N1 (2009) influenza (swine flu) virus as well as thiomersal and an adjuvant.
What is an adjuvant?
Vaccine adjuvants are substances which enhance an immune response. The World Health Organization reviewed the safety of adjuvanted influenza vaccines in 2009 and reported that there were no significant concerns regarding using adjuvanted H1N1 vaccine.
The adjuvant used in Pandemrix is called AS03. This is not used in any other vaccines used in Ireland.
What is thiomersal?
